It’s been more than one month since I came back from the trip to New York but I still didn’t write a post about it. The main reason is that I was just being lazy. The second – every time I looked at photos from this trip, I felt a desire to go there again right at that moment. I think the reason why I liked New York so much was that I arrived with zero expectations. New York has never been in my top 10 cities to visit and it is so different from the charming little European towns that I love so much. But I got a chance to go, so there I went, expecting nothing and, no matter how cheesy it sounds, fell in love with this city. I hope to visit New York again and spend more time exploring but those are the highlights from our first short trip.
High Line is one of the newest and most popular New York attraction. The High Line was just a rail track until it was turned into the elevated park. Now you can walk around 2 km from one end to another and enjoy the unique views of New York. I really liked the High Line and wish we could spend more time there but it was a bit too crowded and not so enjoyable to walk. The only time to escape the crowds is probably in the early morning.
Times Square was interesting to see but not something I definitely want to visit again. All the billboards with the advertisements, lights, shops, restaurants – just a bit too much of everything. It is unique but just not my taste.
Staten Island ferry
If you are looking for a free way to see the Statue of Liberty, you must take the Staten Island ferry. The travel time between Manhattan and Staten Island takes around 25 minutes. The ferry passes not so close to the Statue of Liberty but if you just want to take a photo and check it off your list, it is fine. What is even better about this ferry is that you can see Manhattan from the water and enjoy the harbor views.
New York has never been my dream destination. In fact, I never understood why people go all crazy about this city🤔 Until I saw it with my own eyes, walked the busy streets and felt its international atmosphere. I think last time I said this about Lausanne, but New York is now another city where I would like to live for some time😊
New York City Subway
The New York Subway suddenly made me feel like back home in Ukraine. Full of people and a bit shabby looking, it reminded me of the years I spent in Kiev. We took the subway all the time that we spent in New York. The system is a bit difficult to understand if you are for the first time there but it is really the best way to get around once you understand it.
Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn
Brooklyn Bridge is another sight you can’t miss in New York. We walked the bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn and then spent some time walking around in Brooklyn. I saw the bike rentals where you could rent a bike to cross the bridge and thought that it could be fun at first. But as we were on the bridge, people didn’t seem to care whether they were walking in the bike lane or pedestrian lane, so for those riding bikes, it seemed more frustrating than a fun experience.
You probably already saw the same exact picture of the Manhattan bridge somewhere. It was one of the views that captured my attention when I was looking for things to do in New York and I really wanted to see it in the real life. What you don’t see in the photo is how many people were there taking pictures of the exact same spot. One lady came to us and asked what everyone was taking pictures of. When I answered the bridge, she looked at us as if it was the silliest thing to do 😀 But the view is really cool, isn’t it? Am I silly or why wouldn’t you want to take a photo of it? 🙂
Roosevelt Island Tramway
One of the coolest views we saw in New York was from the Roosevelt Island Tramway. The aerial tramway connects Roosevelt Island to the Manhattan and one-way ride is the same price as a subway ride. The ride is very short but you can also spend some time on the Roosevelt Island. There were many constructions going on but we found a nice walking path next to the river where you can enjoy the Manhattan view.
If we had more time, I would like to spend the whole day exploring the Central Park. It is really huge and every corner has something to offer. I think we only saw 1/3 of the Central Park but it was enough to say that this is something worth spending more time on next time in New York.
Manhattan skyline at night
In the evening we headed to New Jersey to see the Manhattan skyline at night. Even though I saw the pictures of New York countless times before, being there felt so amazing at that moment. I guess no picture can really represent how great it looks in the real life 🙂
Have you been in New York? What should I see next time?
